The eighties pop sensation Bananarama was in town last Friday night and it was another sold-out show at The Danforth Music Hall. With fans gravitating towards the front for a better view of the band and its original lineup who took quite a while to make it here; this was their first ever show in Canada!
The trio of ladies that the Guinness Book of World Records called “the most successful girl band ever”, sounded fantastic. I think the crowd would agree with me, judging by the way that everyone was dancing to the music.

Three world class guitarists — and even beyond the realms of intergalactic boundaries as far as the music that exudes from their guitars is concerned — performed at Toronto’s Massey Hall last week. Joe Satriani brought his G3 tour through town, accompanied on stage by Phil Collen (of Def Leppard), as well as John Petrucci (of Dream Theater).
These guitarists make their instruments absolutely sing on an individual level, but get the three of them playing together at the same time, well, now you’re talking pure magic. Each musician played an individual set show-casing their unique styles of playing. Phil Collen with his band Delta Deep started the evening off with some real southern fried blues. It was down and dirty, raunchy and GOOD!
Next on stage was John Petrucci with his band for a set of incredibly technical heavy metal; headbangin’ and kick-ass rock tunes were to be had! And then came Joe Satriani! The sounds that come out of this man’s guitar are nothing short of amazing. I swear there were moments when I heard the guitar singing to him, with a human voice.
Finally, all three guitar virtuosos hit the stage together to a standing ovation. When they played together, accompanied by Debbi Blackwell-Cook on vocals, it was sheer joy in the faces of the crowd.

Over the span of an average lifetime there are a few rare stars that outshine all others. Now, I mean real legends, icons, idols… whatever you wish to label them. On Saturday night, one of these stars was in Toronto at Massey Hall. Robert Plant brought his band the Sensational Space Shifters to town on this only Canadian stop during his “Carry Fire World Tour.”
You could almost see the anticipation, and definitely feel the excitement in the air as fans packed the house to the rafters. I mean, it’s Robert Plant! Without a doubt one of the best hard rock front men of all time, and as close as anyone’s ever going to get to seeing Led Zeppelin again.
You could see that googly-eyed starstruck rock fan in everyone’s face, regardless of age. Myself included. Robert Plant does that to people. I even showed my Mother a picture from the show. She looked over at my Father, elbowed him, and said… “See , now that’s what YOU should look like.”
It was a wonderful evening of music. Some of his latest songs, along with older solo work, and then of course some Zeppelin songs peppered in. This was definitely one of those “bucket list” evenings for me and most certainly almost every other attendee..
Robert Plant’s Setlist:
01. New World
02. Turn It Up
03. The May Queen
04. Rainbow
05. That’s The Way
06. All The King’s Horses
07. Please Read The Letter
08. Gallows Pole
09. Carry Fire
10. Little Maggie
11. Fixin’ To Die
12. Misty Mountain Hop
13. In The Mood
14. Bring It On Home/Whole Lotta Love
