Last Monday night was International Metal Mayhem Madness at the Mod Club and saw Swedish death metal band Dark Tranquillity roll through town along with Los Angeles thrashers Warbringer and Canadian metal act Striker.
Striker started the evening off with a full throttle metal assault! These dudes did a phenomenal job of getting things started with the first of an ongoing circle mosh that just kept getting bigger and more crowded as the night went on. Warbringer hit the stage next and performed their entire album Woe To The Vanquished. During their performance a few brave (or just crazy) fans left the chaos of the mosh pit to crowd surf onto the stage.
Dark Tranquility closed the night off for us with their melodic death metal set which left a club full of totally happy metalheads with ringing ears to boot. A pretty damn good way to start off the week.

A fitting last concert of the summer season at Budweiser Stage, brought metal heavies the Scorpions and Megadeth to town. Toronto loud music lovers had some incredible opportunities to catch the best of the best, as far as metal shows. September 22nd and everyone is still in shorts & T-shirts… you just gotta love it!
Megadeth started us off, blasting right into their song “Hangar 18”. The roughly hour-long set featured mostly greatest hits. Frontman Dave Mustaine, his signature snarl, and killer guitar riffs had everyone’s head banging hard.
Megadeth setlist:
01. Hangar 18
02. Mechanix
03. Take No Prisoners
04. Sweating Bullets
05. A Tout La Monde
06. Tornado Of Souls
07. Dystopia
08. Symphony Of Destruction
09. Peace Sells
10. Holy Wars
After a short set change and giant “Scorpions” curtain drop, the loud legends kept the music flowing. I love seeing this band live. Considering that they’ve been steadily rocking for the last 50 years, I think that the Scorps must have found the fountain of youth, or some really killer energy drink, the way they race around a multilevel stage with a runway is astounding.
Interacting with the fans, tossing drumsticks as well as guitar picks into the crowd. The newest member of the band is none other than Mikkey Dee of Motorhead fame. After they played “Overkill” in tribute to the late Lemmy Kilmister, Mikkey had the opportunity to show us what he’s got with a kickass drum solo. Scorpions played a solid 2 hours!
Sorpions setlist:
01. Going Out With A Bang
02. Make It Real
03. The Zoo
04. Coast To Coast
05. Top Of The Bill / Steamrock Fever/ Speedys Coming
06. We Built This House
07. Delicate Dance
08. Always Somewhere / Eye Of The Storm/ Send Me An Angel
09. Wind Of Change
10. Rock’n’roll Band
11. Overkill
12. Drum Solo
13. Blackout
14. Big City Nights
15. No One Like You
16. Still Loving You
17. Rock You Like A Hurricane

Labor Day long weekend in Toronto and we have the CNE, Air Show, a Soccer Game at BMO Field, a concert at The Air Canada Centre, and the concert everyone else is trying to get to, Deep Purple with Alice Cooper and Edgar Winter at Budweiser Stage. Needless to say, traffic was a nightmare.
We have such an amazing city here but with more than one event in town traffic just grinds to a halt. It took an hour and a half to drive the roughly 200 remaining yards to the venue which caused us to miss the call time to photograph Edgar Winter. Listening to his set while sitting in traffic, he kicked off with “Free Ride” and finished his set with “Frankenstein”.
Next on the Budweiser stage was The Godfather of Shock Rock. No More Mr. Nice Guy himself! When the curtain on stage dropped, Alice Cooper appeared from behind a shower of pyro sparks which rained down from above. By the forth song, “Billion Dollar Babies”, the crowd’s hands were all in the air as Alice was at the edge of the stage with stacks of “Alice Cooper bucks” stabbed through a sword. After thrashing the sword back and forth, “Bank of Alice” bills started flying through the air to everyone’s delight. All I can say is WOW… a theatrical shock/horror rock show production extraordinaire.
After a short set change the legends themselves, Deep Purple, hit the stage. They started their show off with “Highway Star”, which made most forget about their traffic woes from earlier. Considering that these pioneers of rock have been going strong since 1968, they put on a terrific show playing all the classics and everyone’s favourites. This tour is called “The Long Goodbye”, could they be telling us something? Deep Purple is one of those bands that’s just always fun to see. From the smiles on the musicians’ faces as they’re performing, you can tell that they are still just doing what they love. I tip my hat to them.
Alice Cooper Setlist:
01. Brutal Planet
02. No More Mr. Nice Guy

During the song “Bang Bang” it seemed as though the guys were beckoning people on stage… One fan did make it through the line of refrigerator-sized security (which in itself is quite a feat). She got a big hug from singer Billie Joe Armstrong who then gave her a running start from all the way back at the drum kit…. and she dove back to where she came from, maybe a bit bruised, but definitely with great memories of her night.
Green Day didn’t disappoint with their performance. It was the ’90s all over again, just with more crowd surfing and stage diving… and more expensive beer.
Green Day Setlist
01. Know Your Enemy
02. Bang Bang
03. Revolution Radio
04. Holiday

Korn play at Budweiser Stage in Toronto

American metallers Korn along with openers Stone Sour turned an extraordinary night of “kick-ass metal” into an entirely new dimension of “blow your fucking ear drums out”, during their recent stop at Budweiser Stage in Toronto on the “Serenity of Summer Tour”.
Stone Sour (featuring Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor) hit the stage first and the mayhem began in an instant. Starting off the set with a giant bazooka blast, showering the audience in glittery confetti, Taylor sprayed the crowd with water while noting that he had hurt his knee earlier, but that nothing would stop him from playing. “I’d come out with a fucking cane if I had to,” he noted. Which, of course, made the crowd go wild.
Even that wasn’t enough, during the set bassist Johny Chow even proposed to his girlfriend on-stage… who by the way said yes.
By the time Korn took the stage, the crowd of exuberant metalheads went ballistic. Holy shit were these guys LOUD!!! Korn has found a way to defy the laws of subsonic sound. A really cool part of the show was when singer Jonathan Davis came out with his trademark bagpipes. From the amount of people being tackled by security, taken away by police, and passed out in various flower beds, you would think it was a full moon… nah… just a Tuesday night of metal in Toronto.
