Monsters of Rock Cruise Day 1
Andrew Hartl – Feb 28, 2018 at 06:05PM 0 Comments
There’s a snow storm happening in Toronto and what better time to escape then by heading to Miami for the eighth annual Monsters of Rock Cruise? Spending 6 days on a luxury liner in the Caribbean sounds quite appealing in and of itself, now add 40+ rock bands and stops on two private beaches (one on Coco Cay in The Bahamas, the other on Labadee in Haiti) and you’re living and partying like a rockstar for a week.
The cruise boasts non-stop concerts from morning till late in every venue the ship, Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of The Seas, has to offer. Time to pull out the schedule and decide which shows I want to catch tonight…. There are so many events and concerts that you almost have to plan your day around what shows you want to see, and it’s near impossible to see everyone you want. Luckily though, almost band performs at least twice over the week.
Day 1 included a headline set by Tyketto, along with killer shows by Pretty Maids and Autograph.
G3 w Joe Satriani , Phil Collen and John Petrucci in Toronto

Three world class guitarists — and even beyond the realms of intergalactic boundaries as far as the music that exudes from their guitars is concerned — performed at Toronto’s Massey Hall last week. Joe Satriani brought his G3 tour through town, accompanied on stage by Phil Collen (of Def Leppard), as well as John Petrucci (of Dream Theater).
These guitarists make their instruments absolutely sing on an individual level, but get the three of them playing together at the same time, well, now you’re talking pure magic. Each musician played an individual set show-casing their unique styles of playing. Phil Collen with his band Delta Deep started the evening off with some real southern fried blues. It was down and dirty, raunchy and GOOD!
Next on stage was John Petrucci with his band for a set of incredibly technical heavy metal; headbangin’ and kick-ass rock tunes were to be had! And then came Joe Satriani! The sounds that come out of this man’s guitar are nothing short of amazing. I swear there were moments when I heard the guitar singing to him, with a human voice.
Finally, all three guitar virtuosos hit the stage together to a standing ovation. When they played together, accompanied by Debbi Blackwell-Cook on vocals, it was sheer joy in the faces of the crowd.

Sleeping with Sirens
Andrew Hartl – Jan 30, 2018 at 02:45PM 0 Comments
Florida rockers Sleeping With Sirens stopped at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto on their “Gossip World Tour,” along with opening act Set It Off who also hail from Florida. Set It Off were already on stage and into their third song as I arrived at the venue. At first, I wondered if I had accidentally wandered into the wrong venue as the band were doing a cover of the Backstreet Boys. Judging by the shrieking young girls that were the majority of the crowd, they loved it!
I think we’ve stumbled across a new music genre, I would describe it as “Bubblegum Metal”. Set It Off had quite the stage presence, and had everyone bouncing around. Fittingly, they really did “Set It Off” for the evening.
Headliners Sleeping With Sirens seemed to start their set off with a minor technical glitch. The vocals were missing through part of the first song, but the powerhouse guitarists made it almost seamless. The audience didn’t seem to mind either, they were bouncing around, partying and having a grand old time. Just as a Friday night should be spent… listening to heavy rock in the city!
Sleeping With Sirens’ Setlist:
01. Feel
02. Low
03. Go Go Go
04. Better Off Dead
05. Empire To Ashes
06. Hole In My Heart
07. One-Man Army
08. 2 Chord
09. Gossip
10. The Strays
11. Trouble
12. Fly

14. If I’m James Dean , You’re Audrey Hepburn
15. If You Can’t Hang
16. Kick Me
Big Wreck
Andrew Hartl – Jan 22, 2018 at 02:54PM 0 Comments
Canadian rockers Big Wreck were in town on Friday night along with Attica Riots at Rebel. The three-piece Winnipeg pop/rock band, Attica Riots, started the evening off and did one hell of a job getting everybody into that “it’s Friday night let’s party” kind of mood. Give them a listen, I think you’ll agree that they’re a really fun band.
Headlining tonight was Big Wreck, who are currently on tour and celebrating the 20th anniversary of their hit album In Loving Memory Of… released way back in 1997, and blasting from my car stereo speakers shortly thereafter. It was a great Friday night in one of my favourite venues… Rebel, with one of my favourite bands, Big Wreck and another awesome band, Attica Riots, which for me was newly discovered tonight. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on them.
Touristy fact: when walking from your car to the entrance, take a look over your shoulder. You’ll be rewarded with one of the most spectacular views of Toronto.
Big Wreck’s Setlist:
01. Look What I Found
02. That Song
03. Ill Advice
04. How Would You Know
05. Under The Lighthouse
06. Prayer
07. By The Way
08. Waste
09. Blown Wide Open
10. Between You And I
11. Oh My
12. Fall Through The Cracks
13. Overemphasizing
14. The Oaf
15. Albatross
16. Digging In
17. Come Again
Corrosion Of Conformity
Andrew Hartl – Jan 15, 2018 at 02:46PM 1 Comment
After Black Label Society had to cancel their Tuesday night show due to illness, something good came out it in the end. The Opera House in Toronto graciously hosted American heavy rockers Corrosion Of Conformity, the new headliner, along with New Orleans metalheads EyeHateGod and local act Pale Mare.
As a last-minute concert, tickets were only available at the door. Considering that it was a last-minute show, and on a Tuesday night, and it was minus a kazillion degrees (give or take a degree), the venue and Inertia Entertainment pulled off a killer show. The house was absolutely packed and the place was rockin’!
I arrived in time to catch Toronto’s Pale Mare who really warmed things up for NOLA sludge metal band EyeHateGod who only added fuel to the fire ahead of Corrosion Of Conformity’s blistering performance. Well done, all!

On Sunday night, Swedish masters of mayhem, Avatar, brought their wildly entertaining brand of metal to a sold-out Opera House in Toronto, along with American rockers The Brains and Hellzapoppin.
Hellzapoppin started things off with an array of death defying acts, including the likes of sword swallowing, swinging bowling balls attached to hooks through eyelids, balancing chainsaws & lawn mowers with teeth, walking on broken glass, eating razor blades… you get the idea.
Next up was The Brains with their rockabilly/punk/metal set. A double bass, a guitar, and a drum kit is all it took to make the crowd go nuts. By the end of their set, everyone was chanting “more Brains please”.
A short break to change stage setup and headliners Avatar hit the stage with an “All Hail The King” and very dramatic entrance. A multilevel stage had “The King” perched high on a golden throne, surrounded by his guitarist subjects. Welcome to Avatar country!
Avatar’s Setlist:
01. Glory To Our King
02. Legend Of The King
03. Let It Burn
04. Paint Me Red
05. King’s Harvest
06. Bloody Angel
07. The King Wants You
08. Puppet Show
09. Tower
10. The Eagle Has Landed
11. War Song
12. Raven Wine
13. Reload
14. Smells Like A Freakshow
15. A Statue Of The King
16. The King Welcomes You To Avatar Country
17. Hail The Apocalypse

The heaviness just keeps coming to this city! Tonight Hatebreed, along with Dying Fetus and Code Orange, kicked Toronto metalheads’ asses. The sold-out performance at The Opera House shows yet again, that Metal Rules!
Code Orange hit the stage first and it was sheer pandemonium. These guys are nuts. Guitarists all over the stage, jumping off amps, and getting the fans sweating. Next up were Dying Fetus. Three amazing musicians that are able to blow your eardrums out with killer guitar riffs and bass lines, while the double bass drum kit makes your brain rattle. The mosh pit and crowd surfers are again in full swing, and getting warmed up for what is about to come…
After a brief pause to set up the stage, the lights dim and the crowd goes berserk! Amid chants of “Hatebreed” the band storms the stage and simply put… “just let her rip!” It seems as though the entire venue has turned into one giant mosh pit, from where there was no escape. Fans weren’t just watching the show, they were part of it.
