Corrosion Of Conformity
Andrew Hartl – Jan 15, 2018 at 02:46PM 1 Comment
After Black Label Society had to cancel their Tuesday night show due to illness, something good came out it in the end. The Opera House in Toronto graciously hosted American heavy rockers Corrosion Of Conformity, the new headliner, along with New Orleans metalheads EyeHateGod and local act Pale Mare.
As a last-minute concert, tickets were only available at the door. Considering that it was a last-minute show, and on a Tuesday night, and it was minus a kazillion degrees (give or take a degree), the venue and Inertia Entertainment pulled off a killer show. The house was absolutely packed and the place was rockin’!
I arrived in time to catch Toronto’s Pale Mare who really warmed things up for NOLA sludge metal band EyeHateGod who only added fuel to the fire ahead of Corrosion Of Conformity’s blistering performance. Well done, all!

On Sunday night, Swedish masters of mayhem, Avatar, brought their wildly entertaining brand of metal to a sold-out Opera House in Toronto, along with American rockers The Brains and Hellzapoppin.
Hellzapoppin started things off with an array of death defying acts, including the likes of sword swallowing, swinging bowling balls attached to hooks through eyelids, balancing chainsaws & lawn mowers with teeth, walking on broken glass, eating razor blades… you get the idea.
Next up was The Brains with their rockabilly/punk/metal set. A double bass, a guitar, and a drum kit is all it took to make the crowd go nuts. By the end of their set, everyone was chanting “more Brains please”.
A short break to change stage setup and headliners Avatar hit the stage with an “All Hail The King” and very dramatic entrance. A multilevel stage had “The King” perched high on a golden throne, surrounded by his guitarist subjects. Welcome to Avatar country!
Avatar’s Setlist:
01. Glory To Our King
02. Legend Of The King
03. Let It Burn
04. Paint Me Red
05. King’s Harvest
06. Bloody Angel
07. The King Wants You

The heaviness just keeps coming to this city! Tonight Hatebreed, along with Dying Fetus and Code Orange, kicked Toronto metalheads’ asses. The sold-out performance at The Opera House shows yet again, that Metal Rules!
Code Orange hit the stage first and it was sheer pandemonium. These guys are nuts. Guitarists all over the stage, jumping off amps, and getting the fans sweating. Next up were Dying Fetus. Three amazing musicians that are able to blow your eardrums out with killer guitar riffs and bass lines, while the double bass drum kit makes your brain rattle. The mosh pit and crowd surfers are again in full swing, and getting warmed up for what is about to come…
After a brief pause to set up the stage, the lights dim and the crowd goes berserk! Amid chants of “Hatebreed” the band storms the stage and simply put… “just let her rip!” It seems as though the entire venue has turned into one giant mosh pit, from where there was no escape. Fans weren’t just watching the show, they were part of it.
Hatebreed’s Setlist:
01. Empty Promises
02. Burn The Lies
03. Before Dishonor
04. Puritan
05. Conceived Through An Act Of Violence
06. Afflicted Past
07. Prepare For War
08. Not One Truth
09. Betrayed By Life
10. Mark My Words
11. Last Breath
12. Burial For The Living
13. Worlds Apart
14. Driven By Suffering

17. I Will Be Heard
18. Smash Your Enemies
19. Healing To Suffer Again
20. Below The Bottom
21. Proven
22. Perseverance
23. You’re Never Alone
24. Live For This
25 .Honor Never Dies
26. Looking Down The Barrel Of Today
27. Destroy Everything

On Saturday night SWMRS played The Opera House in Toronto, along with The Interrupters. Both bands hailing from California, the evening of ska / punk went to another dimension of crowd surfing when The Interrupters started playing. It was just non-stop. One brave soul after another surfing their way to the front only to be plucked to safety by security. I almost couldn’t decide whether to watch the surfing or the band.
By the time that SWMRS came out I think it would’ve been impossible to squeeze another person into the venue. The party atmosphere just kept going with fans bouncing, surfing, and just having a great time in general. A job well done once again to everyone at The Opera House; and a hats off to the security staff!
SWMRS Setlist:
01. Palm Trees
02. BRB
03. Harry Dean
04. Silver Bullet
05. Miss Yer Kiss
06. Uncool
07. Miley
08. Car
09. Lose it
10. Cover
11. Turn Up
12. Figuring It Out
13. Hannah

soulfly with cannabis corpse , and noisem
Thursday night and it’s time for “Metal In The City”! We’re at Toronto’s Opera House tonight, with Soulfly, Cannabis Corpse, and Noisem.
Soulfly, who is led by former Sepultura frontman Max Cavalera, performed their side project Nailbomb‘s entire 1994 release, Point Blank”. Cannabis Corpse brought a mascot along; a giant “Bud” carrying an equally giant joint while Baltimore’s Noisem was the first act of the night that I saw, they kicked things off with some hair windmill action. Also on the bill was Lody Kong, an Arizona metal band led by Cavaleras’ sons Igor and Zion.
Blinding orange and red strobe lights, with an occasional blast of white, made getting photographs of the bands somewhat challenging to say the very least. Hard work aside, it was a great night of deafening (and blinding) metal!
Soulfly Setlist:
01. Wasting Away
02. Vai Toma No Cu
03. Guerillas
04. Blind And Lost
05. Sum Of Your Achive
06. Cockroaches
07. For Fuck Sake
08. World Of Shit
09. Exploitation
10. Religious Cancer
11. Shit Pinata
12. Sick Life
Between The Buried And Me with The Contortionist , Polyphia , and Toothgrinder at The Opera House
Andrew Hartl – Oct 05, 2017 at 03:04PM 0 Comments
Last Friday night brought American progressive metal bands Between The Buried And Me, The Contortionist, Polyphia, and Toothgrinder to a sold-out Opera House in Toronto.
It was an early beginning for most metalheads as the openers Toothgrinder took the stage at 7:30 followed by the instrumental progressive metal band Polyphia. Both did a great job of getting fans pumped for the main act though. Once The Contortionist started their set, the mosh pit was in full circle mode, along with a few surfers off to the sides.
Finally, Between The Buried And Me hit the stage with the crowd chanting BTBAM and thrusting fists and devil horns in the air. Blinding flashes of strobes, amidst a wash of red and blue lights, made it difficult even to see the band. This didn’t seem to make a difference to the fans tonight in the testosterone-filled venue. Everyone seemed to just be mesmerized by the rib cage-rattling bass lines.

American metalcore rockers I Prevail, along with space rockers Starset, had the crowd mesmerised during this sold-out performance at Toronto’s Opera House.

Swedish metal band Amaranthe brought their unique sound and triple three vocalist threat, Elize Ryd, Jake E, and Henrik Englund Wilhelmsson (each with their own different style), to The Opera House in Toronto on Sunday, March 5th. The band put on a heck of a show and “Maximalism Tour” openers Failure Anthem and Citizen Zero did not disappoint in the least either.
