There’s a snow storm happening in Toronto and what better time to escape then by heading to Miami for the eighth annual Monsters of Rock Cruise? Spending 6 days on a luxury liner in the Caribbean sounds quite appealing in and of itself, now add 40+ rock bands and stops on two private beaches (one on Coco Cay in The Bahamas, the other on Labadee in Haiti) and you’re living and partying like a rockstar for a week.
The cruise boasts non-stop concerts from morning till late in every venue the ship, Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of The Seas, has to offer. Time to pull out the schedule and decide which shows I want to catch tonight…. There are so many events and concerts that you almost have to plan your day around what shows you want to see, and it’s near impossible to see everyone you want. Luckily though, almost band performs at least twice over the week.
Day 1 included a headline set by Tyketto, along with killer shows by Pretty Maids and Autograph.

Three world class guitarists — and even beyond the realms of intergalactic boundaries as far as the music that exudes from their guitars is concerned — performed at Toronto’s Massey Hall last week. Joe Satriani brought his G3 tour through town, accompanied on stage by Phil Collen (of Def Leppard), as well as John Petrucci (of Dream Theater).
These guitarists make their instruments absolutely sing on an individual level, but get the three of them playing together at the same time, well, now you’re talking pure magic. Each musician played an individual set show-casing their unique styles of playing. Phil Collen with his band Delta Deep started the evening off with some real southern fried blues. It was down and dirty, raunchy and GOOD!
Next on stage was John Petrucci with his band for a set of incredibly technical heavy metal; headbangin’ and kick-ass rock tunes were to be had! And then came Joe Satriani! The sounds that come out of this man’s guitar are nothing short of amazing. I swear there were moments when I heard the guitar singing to him, with a human voice.
Finally, all three guitar virtuosos hit the stage together to a standing ovation. When they played together, accompanied by Debbi Blackwell-Cook on vocals, it was sheer joy in the faces of the crowd.

Over the span of an average lifetime there are a few rare stars that outshine all others. Now, I mean real legends, icons, idols… whatever you wish to label them. On Saturday night, one of these stars was in Toronto at Massey Hall. Robert Plant brought his band the Sensational Space Shifters to town on this only Canadian stop during his “Carry Fire World Tour.”
You could almost see the anticipation, and definitely feel the excitement in the air as fans packed the house to the rafters. I mean, it’s Robert Plant! Without a doubt one of the best hard rock front men of all time, and as close as anyone’s ever going to get to seeing Led Zeppelin again.
You could see that googly-eyed starstruck rock fan in everyone’s face, regardless of age. Myself included. Robert Plant does that to people. I even showed my Mother a picture from the show. She looked over at my Father, elbowed him, and said… “See , now that’s what YOU should look like.”
It was a wonderful evening of music. Some of his latest songs, along with older solo work, and then of course some Zeppelin songs peppered in. This was definitely one of those “bucket list” evenings for me and most certainly almost every other attendee..
Robert Plant’s Setlist:
01. New World
02. Turn It Up
03. The May Queen
04. Rainbow
05. That’s The Way
06. All The King’s Horses
07. Please Read The Letter

09. Carry Fire
10. Little Maggie
11. Fixin’ To Die
12. Misty Mountain Hop
13. In The Mood
14. Bring It On Home/Whole Lotta Love

Big Sugar hit the stage around nine and got the party atmosphere into full swing. Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue with Vintage Trouble

This past Monday I had my socks rocked off at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto. The intense action, acrobatics and visual appeal of dancing horns, made this one of the most fun and entertaining shows that I’ve seen in a while.
Vintage Trouble started off the evening. This American rhythm & blues band have played with the likes of The Who and AC/DC, and holy shit do they know how to rock! Singer Ty Taylor is an entertainment machine; dressed in a vintage checkered suit, he wowed the fans by flying through the air and testing out just how far he can lean backwards while still singing with a vintage microphone.
The next thing I know, Ty is flying over us out into the crowd. I lost track of him for a while then saw him up in the balcony, I lost sight of him a second time and then he appeared on top of the crowd, surfing his way back to the stage. A great band to see live, and a great band for guys to bring a date to. If you know what I mean.
Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue were the main act of the evening. I’m not really sure what music genre I would put them in. They’re kind of a New Orleans jazz and rock n’ roll explosion. Wailing guitars accompanied by saxophones of all shape and sizes, a trumpet and of course, the trombone. Just a really intense and fun band to see live.
Vintage Trouble Setlist:
01. Blues Hand Me Down
02. Doin’ What You were Doin’
03. Gracefully
04. Rollin’
05. Don’t Stop Forever
06. Run Like The River
07. Knock Me Out
Trombone Shorty Setlist:
01. Backatown
02. The Craziest Things
03. On Your Way Down
04. Here Comes The Girls
05. One Night Only
06. Tripped Out Slim
07. Where It At
08. Lose My Mind
09. Then There Was You
10. It Ain’t No Use
11. Hurricane Season
12. Do To Me

Greenville, South Carolina’s phenomenal soul-influenced psychedelic southern rock/blues guitarist Markus King, and his band, made a stop in Toronto at the Horseshoe Tavern on Wednesday night. At only 20 years old, the guy just wails on his guitar. Unbelievable! Amazingly, they were able to fit the entire 6-man band on the Horseshoe’s small stage. The group sounded awesome and I think most of the fans at the packed venue would agree with me if I say, this guy’s going places!
